Channel 5 Withdraw Plans for ‘Poverty Porn’ show in Stevenston‏

poverty_porn_vic.jpgHours after Joe and Councillor Jim Montgomerie launched their campaign against Channel 5’s plans to shoot a ‘poverty porn’ TV programme in Stevenston the TV bosses ditched plans to come to the town.

The Councillors had written to the TV bosses in December warning them against coming to the town but hadn’t received a response. As a result they launched the local campaign they had promised if Channel 5 didn’t provide assurances that they wouldn’t film in Stevenston. A few hours after launching their campaign Channel 5 confirmed they will not film in the town.

Councillor Jim Montgomerie;

“I am delighted that Channel 5 bosses have ditched their ‘poverty porn’ plans. It is a great relief that our community and some of its residents won’t become the latest victims of this divisive form of television. I just wish they would ditch these programmes altogether.”

Councillor Joe Cullinane, Labour’s MSP candidate for Stevenston, added;

“Launching this campaign has put pressure on Channel 5 to bin their plans and I am pleased that by standing up to them we have won this campaign on behalf of the community.”
