Joe Cullinane

Scottish Labour Councillor for Kilwinning

Reason 15: Ban the blacklisters

For years, thousands of construction workers were denied the right to work for simply raising health and safety concerns or committing the 'crime' of being a trade unionist. The Consulting Association blacklist had been exposed and Joe believes we need to take strong action against those firms who used it.

Scottish Labour and trade unions have been calling for all known blacklisters to be banned from public contracts. And at the Council Joe has joined his Labour colleagues calling for a ban on council contracts.

Despite the SNP administration voting against a number of Labour's blacklisting motions at North Ayrshire Council, it has now taken a position that blacklisters shouldn't be awarded council contracts.

However, despithe this clear policy, blacklisters are still winning council contracts. The latest one being Morrison Construction winning the £43million contract for the new Largs school campus >

This is being repeated across Scotland but with Joe and Scottish Labour that will end.

And there will be a Scottish enquiry into blacklisting, something the Labour Group did get the SNP council administration to back despite them opposing one at a national level >
