Reason 24: Better financial support for students

Reason_24-.png

Scottish Labour abolished tuition fees in Scotland and we will keep it that way. However, we will also provide greater financial support to students who need it.

The SNP promised to abolish student debt but in power they have increased it by 400% here in Cunninghame South!

The increase in student debt is because they have slashed bursaries for students from the poorest backgrounds whilst increasing the student loan that they can take out > http://www.heraldscotland.com/news/13899102.Grants_for_poorest_students_in_Scotland_plummet/

Joe has campaigned against these cuts > http://www.joecullinane.co.uk/student_debt_in_cunninghame_south_rockets_by_almost_400_under_snp

And Scottish Labour will reverse them!

In Further Education we also have the scandal of bursary funds running out before the end of the College year. This is because, unlike HE students, those at college don't have a funding entitlement.

This year Ayrshire College faced a £285,000 shortfall > http://www.joecullinane.co.uk/_285_000_shortfall_for_ayrshire_college_bursaries

Scottish Labour will end this uncertainty for college students by ensuring bursary pots meet demand. We will give the funding council an additional £5million which will be ring-fenced for college bursaries.
