Reason 31: Opposing cuts to Women's Aid

In 2014/15, the SNP administration of North Ayrshire Council passed a budget that cut North Ayrshire Women's Aid budget through a re-tendering process.

The new contract tendered represented a 22% cut for refuge, counselling and outreach services and did not include £134,000 of previous funding for children and addiction services.

Here's what the SNP administration's budget said about Women's Aid.....

There was no mention of domestic abuse services or even women at all. Joe therefore asked the SNP portfolio holder what the cut meant for Women's Aid at the next council meeting on 17th December 2014. His response spoke volumes....

By refusing to answer basic questions the SNP Council showed an appalling disregard for the importance of the services that North Ayrshire Women's Aid deliver.

But it was worse.

That 'standard clause' meant that, should North Ayrshire Women's Aid be able to secure external funding to plug the financial gap, they would have the same amount removed from the council's funding.

Thankfully, Joe stepped in and the clause was removed > http://www.joecullinane.co.uk/external_funding_clause_removed_from_women_s_aid_contract

As your MSP, Joe will continue to support Women's Aid and every effort made to tackle domestic violence.
