Schools charged £48,000 to hire their own school facilities

Joe has written to local Parent Council’s about the Council’s school let policy.

Last November Joe revealed that Kilwinning Academy had been charged £933 to hire their own school hall to put on their production of Grease. North Ayrshire Council initially claimed that the money had been refunded to the school but later conceded that it hadn’t.

Joe has now revealed that, over the last three years, schools across North Ayrshire have been charged £48,000 to hire their own schools.

Speaking about the issue, Joe said;

“I always insisted that this was an issue that affected every school in North Ayrshire and I am now able to reveal the full extent of the council’s charges.”

“I believe people will be amazed to hear that schools have been charged £48,000 to hire their own school.”

“The current letting policy is complicated but one thing is clear - local schools are having to take money out of their budget to use their school outside of school hours.”

“I have been promised that the letting policy will be reviewed and I have already made a formal suggestion for that review – schools and their parent councils should be given access to their own school free of charge. That would allow schools to play a bigger role in their communities and encourage them to offer pupils the extra-curricular opportunities that we know helps young people’s development.”
