SNP vote against Fair Rents again

b5c5444d51a4dcdc9c80d4f118d16a50.jpgJoe has slammed SNP Housing Minister Margaret Burgess and her party for voting against fair private rents for the third time this year.

Earlier this year the SNP voted down amendments to the Housing Bill by Scottish Labour which would have made private rents more secure whilst capping rent increases to inflation. On Wednesday they voted down another Labour motion on the issue.

Joe said,

“This is the third chance in a matter of months that the SNP have had to support reforms which would make the private rented sector fairer but they have voted against it again.”

“The number of homes in the private rented sector living in poverty has more than doubled over the last decade to around 120,000 with one in four Scots who live in poverty living in the sector.”

“This is no surprise when rents continue to rise faster than wages and inflation with the Scottish Government’s own private sector rent statistics showing that in parts of Scotland average rents have increased by nearly 40% in just four years.”

“With over 6000 private renters in North Ayrshire alone it is time that Margaret Burgess backed our reforms to ban rip off rent rises and put tenants first.”
