Joe Cullinane

Scottish Labour Councillor for Kilwinning

Student Debt

New figures released by the Student Loan Company show that last year student debt in Scotland jumped by a record 58% to £436million for the year. Loans taken out to cover daily living costs, the category over which Scottish ministers have direct control, jumped by 64% to £409m.

These rises come after the SNP slashed grants for the poorest students to fund other policies in 2012 despite promising to abolish student debt in 2007.

Joe is calling on the SNP to reverse these cuts in the upcoming budget.
