The SNP made a lot of promises to students in 2007 but they have failed miserably. Our Students Deserve Better campaign aims to provide better opportunities for local young people who want to learn or train at College or University.
Here's what the SNP said they would do but in reality have failed to deliver.
In addition to this an issue that really affects local students, particularly those from the poorest backgrounds, was the SNP's decision to slash travel expenses. When I was a student I commuted from Kilwinning to Glasgow everyday. At that time I would be entitled to claim back my travel expenses. However, the SNP have since scrapped travel expenses instead adding a 'travel' supplement of a maximum of £350 to every students loan. This is around a third of what I used to claim in expenses and the cost of rail travel has increased substantially since then. The supplement is also repayable as part of the student loan whereas my expenses were not. Students from the poorest backgrounds are the least likeliest to be able to afford to move away to study so for them commuting is the only option. This change disadvantages them.
We say Students Deserve Better. Will you join us in telling the SNP to reconsider their decisions?
I call on the SNP to reverse their cuts to;
- College Places
- Grants and bursaries which affect the poorest students hardest
- Travel expenses for those students who commute
