Labour’s Joe Cullinane has welcomed George Osborne’s decision to drop his plans to cut working tax credits.
Councillor Cullinane has been campaigning against these cuts and wrote to the Chancellor before his autumn statement urging him to drop the idea.
Commenting on the u-turn Councillor Cullinane said;
“6600 families in Cunninghame South were due to lose out from these tax credit cuts and the decision to scrap them will be a welcome relief to these families. The Chancellor’s u-turn is a big victory for Jeremy Corbyn and all those Labour Party activists who campaigned against the plans.”
“As always the devil will be in the detail and we have seen in the past how a George Osborne budget can unravel in the days and weeks following his announcement. Already there has been a suggestion that the same cuts will be pushed through via Universal Credit and with that already being rolled out across North Ayrshire I am working to establish what the potential impact of this could be on local families. In the meantime, let’s be thankful that our campaign has been successful and the Chancellor has u-turned under pressure.”
